thankful thursday: me time

Last night, Ben was working late, and PB went to bed early, and, GASP, I had some ‘me’ time!

I didn’t know what to do with myself. I felt so rebellious. Should I eat that box of frozen Peanut Butter Pattie Girl Scout cookies in my freezer and pray that Hocus Pocus comes on? Should I watch youtube videos of Alicia Keys and sing “New York” alongside Jay-Z? Should I pluck my eyebrows? Paint my toes? Stalk interesting people on facebook?

Though my eyebrows were begging for attention, I decided to throw caution to the wind and take a bubble bath. I haven’t taken a nice, long bath since who knows when. It was fabulous. Fantastic, really. I could barely even fit in the tub, but I didn’t care. I moved the boats, sharks, fish, rubber ducks, and pool sticks and found my long lost bubble bath solution.

See it in the corner? Hiding from the No-Tears baby shampoo? It’s a bottle of ‘lather me with love’ Very Sexy Bubble Bath from Victoria’s Secret. Hmmmm. What doesn’t belong in this picture?

So I sat in that tub until my hands were completely shriveled, and I enjoyed every single minute of it. I shaved my legs, used every single good smellin’ product I owned, and even washed my hair (that’s a big deal to me). It was bliss. Pure bliss.

I love hanging out with my boys. It’s my favorite thing to do. But honestly, sometimes, I need some ‘me’ time. I think it’s necessary for my sanity.

A couple of weeks ago, I went out with two of my favorite girlfriends. We went to eat and see “I Don’t Know How She Does It” with Sarah Jessica Parker. We had such a good time. We laughed until we cried and ate way too much food. We shared 1 large popcorn and 1 large drink (with 3 straws, because we’re cheap like that) at the theater.

They are those kind of friends. You know, the ones you can sit in an empty movie theater with, share your drink, and still whisper secrets like you’re 8 years old again. They are priceless to me.

Anyway, it felt good to have that ‘me’ time! Soon after I became a mom, I saw how easy it was to totally lose yourself. I was so wrapped up in mom and wife work that I kinda forgot who I was. Between house chores and taking care of a new baby, I was stretched so thin, and was on the verge of insanity. Ben encouraged me to get out of the house and do something I enjoyed, or go out with my friends, but I just felt so guilty for leaving them at home. I soon realized, though, that this wasn’t healthy for any of us. I think it’s good to have a little ‘me’ time. It gives me time to enjoy something for myself, plus it leaves me feeling totally refreshed and ready to take on the world again. It actually even makes me appreciate my family that much more. It’s funny, I can see that PB wants a break from me too sometimes. When family or friends come to visit, he’ll usually stick out his little arms like ‘Oh thank heavens you’re here! Mom is driving me nuts!’

So today, I’m thankful for the ‘me’ time that I get. Whether it’s a 15 minute bubble bath, or a dinner and movie with my best friends, it’s good for me to have every now and then and I know it’s necessary for me. It gives me a little break to unwind, regroup, and do really important things, like alphabetically organize my recipes, or try to stretch my skinny jeans.

On a side note, I need some help. Some major help. Remember when I told you that I was going to make all of the food for PB’s birthday party? Well, I’m still going to do that because I’m a nutjob, but I need a reeeeeally good cake/cupcake recipe to use. Do y’all have one? Or know of a good one on the web somewhere? I’ve looked at tons of cooking websites, but there are so many, how do you know what to choose? I want one that someone can really vouch for. I’m not opposed to using a cake mix, but for a birthday cake/cupcake, I like to at least doctor up the mix a little so it has more of a bakery taste/density. I’m looking for a classic vanilla or chocolate recipe. So if you’ve got a good recipe, please share!

Please…..
