We finished building our house 5 years ago (time flies) and we’ve been slowlllllyyyy turning it into our ‘home’. One room that’s gotten very little attention is our master bedroom. It’s a room full of hand-me-downs and mismatched furniture (though I have major love for the mismatched look), and it needed a little TLC. It just didn’t feel very ‘home-y. That may sound silly, but ‘home-y-ness’ is a big deal to me!
I set out on a mission to make this space a little more cozy and inviting, while sticking to a budget. I left our two sets of hand-me-down drawers alone, and focused on the area around our bed. I have only one old grainy nighttime before picture (go figure) to share, but I ended up changing up our bedding, getting a new rug, table lamps, and wall decor, and changing around some other items in the room while ‘shopping’ from my house. Side note – before you re-do a space, Brittany, take a picture!
I do love some color, but I’ve always been drawn to rustic white. I liked the idea of white bedding because I can change up the look with different color pillows and throws. Plus, I think white bedding just looks so dang comfy. I looked at pricey down comforters for a while, but we already had a good one from our first house. It was a wedding gift, so its 10 years old, but it still works! The problem was that it had yellowed over time. So I came across a perfect solution – a white ruffled 3-piece duvet cover for under $60. I just slipped it over our old yellowed comforter and it gave it new life!
It was super easy to put on, and the material is actually really comfy. It came with two ruffled pillow shams too. It’s a great bedding base that you could build on for sure!
I ended up using our old Euro pillows, the two shams that came with the duvet set, and the pillow cases that came with the sheet set. I did buy a set of new sheets. I’m embarrassed to say this, but we’ve literally had like 3 sets of sheets in our married life. Don’t worry – I wash them alot 😉 This set was long overdue and we LOVE it! I love the pattern, and they are really soft. Great for summer and warmer months for sure.
I shopped my house for my other three throw pillows. They are IKEA 20×20 pillows with interchangeable covers.
Our night tables are Target purchases from several years ago, but I did get this new set of lamps at a great price point, and just added a few decorative touches from the house for the tables. I had the small wreath above the bed, but wanted something a little bigger. So I found the window pane at Hobby Lobby for 50% off (does anyone ever pay full price there?!?) and just added the wreath to that. The curtains and rods are the same old ones from IKEA.
I did get a new rug after much deliberation. It was definitely an ‘investment piece’, but rugs usually are. I am IN LOVE with this rug. It was only my second purchase from Wayfair and ordering a rug without seeing it in person wasn’t ideal, but I took a chance and I’m SO glad I did. I love the coloring – it’s got a light blue/gray pattern that looks worn, so it matches the white bedding perfectly!
I rearranged some of the old decor, and purchased a new wall hanging (from Hobby Lobby – 50% off!) for the wall beside our bed.
The secretary’s hutch is one of my most favorite pieces of furniture in our house. It’s a hand-me-down from my mother-in-law and I just added a few little decorative touches to the top (shopping my house again for the win).
The last thing I did to spruce things up was rearrange the small ‘gallery’ wall above our work desk. Our room also functions as our study for now since our youngest’s room is in our home office. Eventually, he’ll share a room with his big brother and we’ll convert his old room back to a home office/spare bedroom – but for now, we are making it work the best we can.
The “home is wherever I’m with you sign” was hanging above the secretary hutch, so I moved it and tried to rearrange my pieces to fit. It was a little DIY project I made when we moved into our house. I’m still looking for a small calendar to fit in the little space above our desk. I usually have one I put there, but couldn’t find one at the Target dollar spot this year!
Our computer desk is a major oldie. I suppose it’s about time to upgrade. Maybe we will do that when we fix our office? To be honest though, I think I’d have a hard time parting with it. That was my parent’s desk that I found in their basement and revamped. I wrote about the process back in my old blogging days. I named it my ‘think you’re so hott desk” for good reasons 😉
So that’s a wrap for my little budget makeover! The biggest purchase was the rug – but for the size and the quality, it was a steal. I think I’m sold on Wayfair! The best purchase was the duvet. I honestly had no idea what a duvet was. But it’s genius! I was able to hide an old, yellowed comforter inside it to create a whole new bed set. Brilliant!
I’ve got my eyes on other rooms in the house now – just don’t tell Ben 😉
